Data

The data used in this analysis was compiled from various public sources and was manually created, which were then organized in a ArcGIS geodatabase. It is further described below:

Shapefiles:

• Outline of Montréal (Montréal Neighbourhoods)
  • Retrieved from http://donnees.ville.montreal.qc.ca/dataset/polygones-arrondissements
• Major Road Networks
  • Retrieved from https://www.donneesquebec.ca/recherche/fr/dataset/vmtl-geobase#avertissementTelechargement_70c1f8c7_91a0_4553_b602_89c3edb959b5
    • Used class 7 (highways) and 6 (major roads) to create a road network layer
      • Selected class 7 and 6 in attribute table and exported data to a new layer
• Green Spaces
  • Retrieved from https://www.donneesquebec.ca/recherche/fr/dataset/vmtl-grands-parcs-parcs-d-arrondissements-et-espaces-publics
    • Chosen because people have tended to retreat to parks and other green spaces during quarantine to pass the time, thus, their proximity could potentially be related to clusters of COVID-19 outbreaks
• Elderly Homes
  • Locations of long-term care homes retrieved from Google Maps
    • • Google search: “Elderly Homes Montréal”
    • Points were then pinned using Google Earth Pro and singularly exported as KML files
    • Each point KML file was combined into one file using https://kmlmerger.com/
    • The KML file was then converted to a Shapefile using ArcGIS Pro KML to Layer tool
• Census Tract Boundaries (2016)
  • Accessed via CHASS UBC, retrieved from https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2011/geo/bound-limit/bound-limit-2016-eng.cfm
    • File was reprojected to NAD 1983 MTM 8 from Lambert Conformal Conic
    • File was then clipped to the Outline of Montréal

Metadata:

• Census Tract Information across Montréal: (census.xls)
  • Accessed via CHASS UBC, exported as a .xls
  • These variables were chosen because they pertain to the reported vulnerable populations by the Public Health Agency of Canada (2020) and local Québec news reports (CTV News Montréal, 2020), include:
    • PopDen = Population density
    • Pop65 = Percentage of the population over 65
    • Jewish = Percentage of the population that is Jewish
    • Alone = Percentage of the population living alone
    • LowIncome = Percentage of the population who are low income
    • HC_SA = Percentage of the population working in the health care and social assistance industry
    • Homes_CT = The number of long-term care homes per Census Tract (manually added to the table and determined from visual analysis because there are only 14 care homes and are not included in the census)
• COVID-19 Cases per Montréal Neighbourhood : (covid.xls)
  • Derived from total cases on April 14, 2020 NOT complete total cases, further reported on in Limitations
  • Retrieved from https://montreal.ctvnews.ca/covid-19
    • Entered values for each Montréal neighbourhood into a Microsoft Excel file (.xls)
