I finally had a chance to take a look at the article that Erika shared by GM rice, and decided to explore a bit further by taking a look at the website of Ventria, the company in the U.S. that produces the GM rice.

From the information posted on the company’s website, it appears that the GM rice is not intended for consumption per se, but is grown for the purpose of producing large quantities of several specific proteins with beneficial properties (e.g. lactoferrin and lysozyme, which are immune factors found in human milk).
The proteins are extracted and purified from the GM rice, and then sold as ingredients for fortification of products like infant formula. The GM rice itself is never sold as is.
