Thursday January 21: “Narrative, Positionality and Power”

Liu Institute, Boardroom, 16:00 – 18:00 hrs

This will be a reading & discussion session. Invited guest commentator: Dr. Jon Beasley-Murray (Dept. of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies).

In this session we will read and discuss an ethnographic novel about a Brazilian trans woman written by anthropologist Tobias Hecht in conjunction with a short article addressing the debate over Rigoberta Menchú’s personal testimonio.

Thursday January 28: “Gender and Nationalism”

This will be a reading & discussion session. Invited guest commentator: Dr. Bill French (Dept. of History).

In this session we will read the groundbreaking work of Diana Taylor about the dirty war in Argentina. A short piece about Chile’s transition to democracy will also be discussed.

Friday February 5 – “Engendering Politics: Gender, Class and Power”

Liu Institute, Caseroom, 16:00 – 19:00 hrs

This will be a film screening & discussion session. The film will be introduced by Dr. Rita de Grandis and Dr. Kim Beauchesne (Dept. of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies).

In this session we will watch and discuss the film Miss Mary (Argentina 1986; Dir. Maria Luisa Bemberg).

Friday March 5 – “Stories of Race, Gender and Class”

Liu Institute, Boardroom, 16:00 – 18:00 hrs

This will be a reading & discussion session. Invited guest commentator: Dr. Gastón Gordillo (Dept. of Anthropology).

In this session we will read the classic work on sex and race in Andean folk tales by Mary Weismantel. Additionally, we will read a short piece on discourses of urbanization, modernization, and progress, and the value generated by women’s disappearances in Ciudad Juárez.

Friday March 19 – “Research on Gender and Sexuality in Latin America at UBC”

Liu Institute, Boardroom, 15:00 – 18:05 hrs

This session will be a student presentation seminar in which graduate students will present and receive feedback on their works in progress focused on issues of gender and sexuality in different Latin American regions, cities, and countries.

Invited discussants: Dr. Juanita Sundberg (Dept. of Geography) and Dr. Mary Bryson (Dept. of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education).
