READINGS

Each of the reading & discussion sessions will focus on the critical appraisal of one book and one short journal article or book chapter.

Each session will count with a UBC professor whose area of research and expertise focuses on issues of/in/about Latin America. As guest commentator for the session, he or she might provide some background information about the works under review and the authors and pose provocative questions during the session.

The reading sessions are conceived to generate rich discussions among graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty members. If you are interested in participating in any of the the reading & discussion sessions, please be prepared to discuss the readings, contribute your knowledge and experience, and engage in a fruitful and friendly conversation with fellow participants.

Welcome to the blog of the Liu Institute's Research Group on Gender and Sexuality in Latin America.

This research group brings together undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and community members interested in issues of gender, sexuality and feminism, with a particular geographical focus in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The group members seek to investigate and challenge essentialist gender ideologies, explore contemporary social movements organized around issues of gender and sexuality, consider customary and alternative sexualities, and interrogate notions about Latin America and/or the Caribbean as homogeneous geopolitical and sociocultural regions in critical ways.

The group hosts reading and discussion sessions, film screenings, and graduate student workshops, among other events.
