Mar 12th, 2011 by sundberg
On the evening of Wednesday March 16th, GEOG 495 in partnership with Jolom Mayaetik held an opening reception for Women Weaving Worlds: Living Resistance, an exhibition featuring works by the women of Jolom Mayaetik.
Jolom Mayaetik is an independent, autonomous and women-run weaving cooperative based in Chiapas, south Mexico. The cooperative was founded in 1996 and currently consists of approximately 240 indigenous artisans who produce weaving for fair trade market distribution.
Examples of the cooperative’s weaving are on display at the Simon K.Y. Global Lounge (2205 Lower Mall, Building 1 in the Marine Drive Residence, UBC) from March 16th to March 18th.
We are grateful to the staff at the Global Lounge, who helped us prepare the space for the reception.
