Section 8.3 from the IATA regulations addresses the container requirements for pet animals, farm livestock, and farmed deer or antelope. Their full manual on regulations is not easily accessible to the public, but this accessible section outlines some important concepts that supports OIE’s regulations on transportation (showing consistency among different organizations).
Within section 8.3, it outlines basic standards for what the material the container should be made out of, that it should be leak proof, not injury the animal, etc. Feeding and watering are given based on the shipper’s instructions. For tranquillisation, similar to OIE, IATA also does not recommend sedation, stating that most, if not all, tranquillising drugs can lower blood pressure, which already occurs naturally at high altitudes. With giraffes relying heavily on proper blood pressure to ensure blood is pumped completely to extremities, one could extrapolate that tranquillisation would be very risky, if not fatal, for such a mammal.
