South African National Standards (SANS)

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/SABS_logo.pngSouth African National Standards (SANS), which is a division of South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), has created regulations and guidelines specifically for large megafuana species in their local area. Comparing their guidelines to that of the OIE shows SANS to follow many of the same headings. These address adequate and proper handling, containers, and travel, specifically with regards to land transportation of common African megafauna.

Under the standards, in part 2, it addresses vehicles for transportation of wild herbivores by road to holding pens and other facilities. It goes into great detail with regards to how the container should be built (giving guidelines to the different types of doors, floor coverings, locks, roof colour, just to name a few).

Continuing on to section 6 – Requirements for specific species, section 6.1 outlines what is necessary for giraffes.

There are two types of trailers used for transport: recovery (Figure 4 from the document) and mass crate (Figure 5 from the document) trailers. Recovery trailers are intended for short distances, such as from a point capture to a mass crate, having an open roof at the top and often housing only a single giraffe. Mass crate trailers are used for longer distances, such as for road, sea, or air travel, providing barriers on every side and can house multiple individuals.

It is interesting to note that later on in their regulations, they do mention that tranquillization can be used when necessary, for animals in transport (failing to specify if emphasis should be given to flight transport as expressed by IATA). A last unique difference is their mention and description of restraint methods for giraffes in recovery trailers. While transported, the animal should be haltered, and be provided earplugs or earmuffs to dull the senses (as shown in Figure A. 1 from the document).
