With giraffes reaching heights of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters), it may appear miraculous as to how their body can function on such a large scale. If a giraffe were to lower its neck, would they not faint from the vast amount of blood rushing to their head? With their limbs and brain meters away from their torso, how does their heart and lungs supply enough oxygen to circulate all the way around? When a giraffe detects danger, how can these animals still respond quickly when their nerve signals would have to travel meters at a time? By better understanding their cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous system, we can come to appreciate how the giraffe’s unique features truly make them a biological wonder of the world.
