Comment Policy

Welcome to the blog for ASIA 354: Introduction to Japanese Cinema.  This blog is designed to be a resource for both the class and the wider UBC community, in which students of this class share their film reviews. Discussion of films viewed in class should take place on the discussion boards on Vista.

The blog is moderated, and no posts or comments will be posted until they have been approved by the moderator. This process may occasionally cause delays during busy periods. Please do not email regarding unposted comments until at least 48 hours have passed

Posts and comments will not be posted if they do not follow the blog’s comment policy:

a) No ableist, homophobic, racist, sexist, or otherwise derogatory language is acceptable.  Avoid violent imagery, rape jokes, trolling, threats, and hate speech.

b) Polite debate is encouraged. However, personal comments and insults are unacceptable. “I don’t understand what you see in this movie—could you explain it to me?” is fine: “Anyone who likes this movie is stupid” is not.

c) Students are asked to avoid major spoilers in their reviews.

d) Both Japanese and the English titles of films must be used in the reviews.

TAGGING/CATEGORIZATION

You are asked to tag your posts with the following tags:

DIRECTOR- dir:  e.g. dir: Ozu Yasujiro. Please use Lastname Firstname, following Japanese naming conventions.

ERA- era:   e.g. era: 1960s. The following eras should be used: prewar, wartime, occupation, and then by decade: 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s.

You may need to create these tags, especially during the early part of the semester.  This can be done in the ‘post’ page.

Categories have already been created for the various genres of films. Please tick the categories which best describe the film you are posting about. Note that more than one category may apply.

If you have technical problems with posting, you can see the Japanese Librarian, Shirin Eshghi, in the Asian Library, or consult the TA during her office hour.
