The Beginning

This blog will discuss concentration camps and their function in the Holocaust. To understand the place and importance of concentration camps in Nazi genocide, an examination of the roles of Heinrich Himmler, Reinhard Heydrich, and Joseph Goebbels is necessary. Each played a specific role in making the concentration camp the primary tool for industrial killing in the Nazi attempt to fulfill their vision of a judenrein Europe.

Prior to the concentration camps being used as holding cells for the Jews, the camps operated as a place to send political prisoners. To better understand the function of the concentration camps during the Holocaust, the following entries will discuss how camps transitioned from a labour-focus and became sites for mass murders. It is also important to understand the contributions made by Himmler, Heydrich and Goebbels during the Holocaust. Hitler had the direction, however it was his comrades who were to fulfill his vision.
