Joseph Goebbels

The man behind the cultural life of the Nazi Regime, Joseph Goebbels, held the role of Propaganda Minister in the Third Reich. Goebbels was appointed as Minister during 1933 and orchestrated Kristallnacht in November 1938. (Kershaw, 455) To help propel the fight against Jews and political opponents, Goebbels launched a daily newspaper called Der Angriff (The Attack). The newspaper depicted Hitler as the superman for the German people and used Jews as the scapegoat for all of Germany’s problems. (Wistrich, 77) “The Nazis’ political success in opposition has frequently been attributed to Goebbels’ manipulatory talents.” (Welch, 17)

It is without a doubt that Goebbels hated the Jews. “He combined verbal warnings that, as a result of the war, “the Jews will pay with extermination of their race in Europe and perhaps beyond” with careful avoidance in his propaganda material of discussing the actual treatment of the Jews, i.e., any mention of the extermination camps.” (Wistrich, 79)

Goebbels’ connection to the concentration camps came in the form of supervision. He was “one of the chief secret abettors of the “Final Solution,” personally supervising the deportation of Jews from Berlin in 1942.” (Wistrich, 78) The master propagandist already knew the fate of the Jews being deported and made an entry in his diary stating, “in general, it can probably be established that 60 percent of them will have to be liquidated, will only 40 percent can be put to work.” (Longerich, 514) Like his comrades, Joseph was completely aware of the atrocities taking place at the concentration camps and promoted his intensive antisemitic propaganda campaign to all Germans.

In this video, Goebbels is giving a speech about media and propaganda at the Berlin Sportpalast. The speech was given to SA and SS comrades during 1933. The Sportpalast was an indoor arena in Berlin and because of its size, larger meetings could be held here.
