Applications are open for Junior Student Leader positions with UBC Jump Start 2012!

UBC Jump Start is a transformative, transitional academic program for first year international and Aboriginal students. UBC Jump Start provides first year international and Aboriginal students with an intensive two-week academic preparation for university life that is followed by first year transition programming. UBC Jump Start offers a combination of lectures, classes, workshops, residence living, and social and cultural activities led by our outstanding faculty, staff, and student leaders.

UBC Jump Start is currently hiring 30-40 Junior Student Leaders. These positions are suitable for developing student leaders who are interested to grow their capacities as leaders and professionals. Job descriptions for these positions and applications information can be found online by searching “Jump Start” on Career Services ‘Search for Jobs<http://www.students.ubc.ca/careers/index.cfm>’ website.

On Monday, January 9th (6-7:30pm, IBLC 260) and on Thursday, January 12th (6-7:30pm, BUCH D316), UBC Jump Start Staff will be hosting information sessions. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in being a Junior Student Leader to learn more about the program and the position.

Canucks Game (Canucks vs. Kings)

IPP is going to a Canucks game at Rogers Arena!! Ice hockey is a big part of Vancouver culture. Join us and explore local sports while meeting and mingling with new people!

•What: Vancouver Canucks vs. Los Angeles Kings at Rogers Arena
•When: Game at 7pm Tuesday, January 17, 2012
•Price: $65/person (including transportation)

*Please try to bring the exact amount of money*
•Ticket sales: will be available at I.House front desk from December 14th, 2011- January 16th, 2011

(get yours early as tickets will be sold fast)
•Transportation: Charter bus to and from the game.

I.House Christmas Dinner is looking for volunteers!

Hi IPPers, I.House Christmas Dinner is looking for volunteer!

They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to get involved with preparations for an annual Christmas dinner being held for UBC International students and their families!

This year’s event takes place on Thursday, December 15th from 5 – 7pm at International House, and is organized by the UBC Chaplains in collaboration with International Student Development and Student Housing.

The UBC Christmas Dinner is an opportunity for students to learn what Christmas in Canada is all about by enjoying a traditional turkey meal, carol-singing, and of course, a Christmas tree complete with Santa and presents!

They are currently recruiting volunteers to make this event a fun and memorable experience for approximately 140 attendees.

To get involved, please email Melanie Crudgington (melanie.crudgington@ubc.ca) with the following information: your name, contact information (email and telephone number), and shift(s) you wish to cover. Volunteers who sign-up for two shifts are invited to also attend the Christmas Dinner.  Feel free to sign-up for one, two or three shifts and remember, your commitment does make a difference… 

1. Logistical set-up and decorations at International House
When:  Wednesday, December 14th, 1:30 – 4:00pm

(5 volunteers required)

2. Final decorations at International House

When:  Thursday, December 15th, late morning/early afternoon for approx. 3 hours

(4 volunteers required)

3. Food preparation/Assistance with cooking

When:  Thursday, December 15th, 1:30 – 5:00pm

(4 volunteers required)

Applications are now being accepted for volunteering positions with Winter GALA 2012!

GALA: International Orientation is an award-winning orientation program that supports international students’ transition to UBC and Canada. It addresses the practical aspects of studying in Canada (study permits, entry visas, health insurance and employment), fosters the development of peer communities through social programming, and encourages leadership development through an exploration of the services and resources offered at UBC Vancouver.

GALA volunteers play a key role in welcoming UBC’s newest international students to our campus and to Canada.Additionally, these positions offer opportunities for leadership development and are a great experience for anyone looking to get more involved with UBC Orientations (UBC Jump Start, Imagine UBC).

Winter GALA Team is looking for students who will dedicate themselves to delivering a supportive, informative and inspiring orientation and transition program for new-to-UBC international students. To apply to volunteer with Winter GALA 2012 click here.

IPP Wellness Breakfast

Hi everyone!

I hope you are all doing very well, and that midterms and papers are not taking up all of your time, because we have a lot of exciting learning labs and events happening in October! From yummy breakfasts and a thrilling Halloween party to interactive workshops all over campus, October is quickly becoming the busiest and most fun month yet! =)

To start off, we have Thrive Week (http://thrive.ubc.ca/) shaking things up this week with tons of fun and informative events to encourage the UBC community to invest in a healthier lifestyle, including our very own IPP Wellness Breakfast! Join us this Thursday, October 20th, between 9 – 11 AM at the Simon K. Lee Global Lounge (map) for a delicious, healthy, FREE breakfast. If you can’t stay for the whole thing, drop by to grab a muffin, to participate in a quick morning stretch, or just to say hi on your way to class! We’re also creating a personalized playlist with people’s favorite morning songs on Facebook, and a lot of people have already shared their top picks. I have to say, we are quite an eclectic crowd! Share YOUR favorite song with us by commenting below or visiting our Facebook event page. I’m curious to see what the end result of our morning playlist will be!

If you can’t make it to our breakfast though, don’t worry – Check out the Thrive Week website for more activities! From workshops to movie sessions to morning breakfasts, you’ll definitely find something that will interest you and help you maintain a healthy lifestyle at UBC!

Hi all IPP Peers!

Thank you all for coming out to Meet Your Peer Day on the beautiful sunny day! I hope all of you had the chance to get to know your Group and some of great resources on Campus such as the Wellness Centre and International Peer Advisors (IPAs). Just as a reminder, if you want to get more information on your wellbeing and ANYTHING related to your health, you can visit the Wellness Centre in the Student Union Building. If you need help with Study Visas, Health insurance or Work Permits, find the IPA’s in I.House and Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. Add them on Facebook (UBC IPA)! Hope to see you soon at your Group Event or at one of our next upcoming events: Thrive Week Breakfast with Wellness (Oct. 20) and Halloween Party (Oct.28)!
