Air Canada claims Porter Airlines has a monopolistic advantage at Island Airport

20080717aircanadaIn this past weekends report the Globe and Mail is reporting that Air Canada has filed a lawsuit claiming that Porter Airlines as an unfair competitive advantage at the Island Airport because Porter currently holds all of the departure and arrival slots.

Air Canada has lost a fair number of their business479310825_e0fb6f4b19 clientele to Porter simply because it is more convenient to fly out from the Island airport rather than from Toronto Pearson airport. However, I feel as though Air Canada doesn’t really have a case against porter because:

1. The TPA has already agreed to allow competition. 50% of the slots will be divided between competitior airlines such as Air Canada and West Jet.

2. The fact that Air Canada says they need more slots, in my opinion, is obsolete. Air Canada once flew our of the Island airport and then they chose to cancel their services from the Island airport; essentially giving up their slots.
