What Came Before

Concepts we have previously developed:

Before we begin today’s topic, take a few moments in your group to work through the following questions.  As always, feel free to use all of the technology at your disposal.  Graphing calculators are available in class or online at this link. Also, if you cannot reach consensus in your group, join with another group for some fresh perspective.

Question 1:

How does the graph of y = 0.3(x-5)2+7 compare to y = x2?

Question 2:

I transform the graph of y = f(x) so that it undergoes a horizontal compression by a factor of 0.5, a vertical expansion by a factor of 3, is reflected across the x-axis, translated horizontally +7 units and vertically +2 units.  What is the new function?

Question 3:

Go back to your answer to question 1.  Compare the vocabulary in your answer with the vocabulary in question 2.  If you used different terms, “translate” your words into math language.

Question 4:

Make sure each person in your group can graph one period of y = sin x and one period of y = cos x on the interval 0 to 2 pi.

Continue on to Predict.
