About Jeannie:

Jeannie Shoveller, PhD, is a Professor at UBC’s School of Population & Public Health and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. She is currently Director of Research at the BC Centre on Substance use, as well as Associate Director of the newly established Centre for Gender and Sexual Health Equity. She is also the former Director of Epidemiology & Population Health and the Drug Treatment Program with the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. In addition, Prof. Shoveller is the founder and lead investigator of UBC’s Youth Sexual Health Team, which includes interdisciplinary faculty, research staff, and students from universities across North America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and South America.

To date, Prof. Shoveller has served as Principal Investigator on more than 30 studies (PI on $7.2+M), with more than 180 peer-reviewed publications. Her research addresses social inequalities in health. Her work on HIV, addictions, mental health, gender-based violence as well as adolescent health is widely cited. Prof. Shoveller has supervised the training of more than 70 Doctoral and Master’s students as well as Post-Doctoral Fellows from 12 countries.

In 2015, Prof. Shoveller was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences as an “outstanding public health scholar whose leadership and vision has contributed to system change nationally and internationally”. Prof. Shoveller has held a number of other prestigious career awards. From 2008-13, she held an Applied Public Health Chair, awarded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Prof. Shoveller also held a Senior Scholar career award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR 2007-2012). Between 2000-2007, she held two career awards simultaneously: Scholar Award from the MSFHR and Scientist Award from the National Cancer Institute of Canada.

Prof. Shoveller works extensively abroad (Brazil, France, UK) and has been an International Visiting Professor at many prestigious universities. She is appointed as a Research & Innovation Expert for the European Commission. She previously chaired an international peer-review panel at l’Institut National du Cancer (INCA), France between 2014-2018. She has served on several peer-review panels at CIHR, including the CIHR Banting Post-Doctoral Fellowship, CIHR Operating Grant & Project Scheme panels, in addition to chairing and serving on funding review panels in the US, UK and France. Closer to home, she was a member of the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Appointments, Re-Appointments, Promotion & Tenure Committee for several years.

As Chair of the Population Health Intervention Research Initiative for Canada, she led a Pan-Canadian network of 20+ government agencies, researchers, research funding organizations, non-government organizations, and health charities to establish a national and international research agenda on population health intervention. To address Canada’s need for highly-qualified personnel in this area, Prof. Shoveller and Prof. Louise Potvin (Université de Montréal) led a bilingual, CIHR-funded Strategic Training Initiative for Health Research on Population Health Intervention Research.

Prof. Shoveller also has served in several other leadership and expert advisor roles, including: Director of UBC’s Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) and an 8-year appointment as a member of the CIHR-IPPH Advisory Board.
