To date, Prof. Shoveller has directly supervised the training of over 70 Doctoral and Master’s students as well as Post-Doctoral Fellows from 12 countries, including Canada, Haiti, Rwanda, Brazil, France, UK, India, Iran, USA, Nigeria and The Netherlands. These trainees have been awarded prestigious fellowships (e.g., CIHR; Fulbright; Vanier; Banting; Killam; Trudeau; MSFHR; UK’s ESRC).

Prof. Shoveller also is a much sought-after teacher in international settings, including France, Switzerland, Australia, Spain, and several universities in Brazil. In 2013, she was selected as a EUROPUBHEALTH Scholar, teaching as a Visiting Professor at the prestigious Ecole des hautes études en santé publique (EHESP) in Rennes, France. As a EUROPUBHEALTH Scholar, Prof. Shoveller received funding from the European Commission under the ERASMUS MUNDUS Programme to establish linkages with the EHESP and their international network of students. Building on this experience, she continues to offer opportunities for students from across the globe to visit and train with her team at UBC as well as to open up new opportunities for UBC-based students and post-docs to receive reciprocal training abroad.

Prof. Shoveller also co-led (with Prof. Louise Potvin, Université de Montréal) an educational network of 8 universities across Canada to generate capacity for excellence in population health intervention research in Canada and internationally. Using $1.8M secured through a CIHR-funded Strategic Training Initiative for Health Research, Professors Potvin & Shoveller established PHIRNET: Population Health Intervention Research Network for Canada. This training program offered graduate student bursaries, national and international learning exchanges (supported by travel awards), a Pan-Canadian webinar offered in English and French, and an annual, bi-lingual Summer Institute that provided training and networking opportunities for over 200 students.

At UBC, she is widely respected as a teaching leader and has been nominated for UBC’s Killam Teaching Prize. Prof. Shoveller currently teaches: “Introduction to the Social Determinants of Health” (SPPH 527) at UBC’s School of Population & Public Health.
