Hello there, and welcome to my blog. My name is Joseph (Joe) Sourisseau and I am I first year student at UBC in the Global Citizens branch of the Coordinated Arts Program (CAP). A brief background on me; I was born in Kelowna but grew up in Vancouver and have most recently have moved to North Vancouver. I attended St. Georges for most of my academic career. There I exceled athletically and was able to dramatically improve my academics. Through out my time at St. Georges I took many leadership roles ranging from: School Athletic Prefect, Varsity Rugby Captain, and head of communications for Alley Out Reach, a charity based out of our school that is run by grade 12’s each year. While attending St. Georges I was lucky enough to try a various sports and finding my passion, rugby. Throughout my years I had numerous outstanding coach’s and teammates and through these various experiences rugby has demonstrated the key importance of confidence, leadership and teamwork. While picking a university to attend, UBC stuck out to me because of the superior Rugby program, amongst the many other appealing features. I am a member of the UBC Rugby Team; however not playing yet, I fractured my tibia plateau playing rugby last may. I finished the game with virtually a crumbling knee. After one trip to the family doctor, an x-ray, CT Scan and consultation it was clear I would have to undergo surgery. Five Hours later I awoke with four screws and a little hip bone in my knee not to mention a substantial amount of morphine in my system. Nevertheless, the future is bright and if everything goes according to plan I will be back playing in January. Enough about me lets talk about ASTU 100A and more specifically life narratives. Coming into university I have not had much exposure to a life narrative but after learning more about what entails a life narrative I have grown to be more excited to deepen my understanding of them. By learning as well as physically writing a life narrative, I have had the chance to learn more about myself and am eager to learn more about literary devices and sharpen my literary skills. Nonetheless, my excitement can be matched by hesitation as English has never been one of my strong suits. Speaking has always come fairly easy to me although taking a pen and paper and trying to get those ideas on a page always poses some anxiety. High school and university are two very different academic platforms, and I am eager to bridge my knowledge and literary capabilities to the university level. This is how I would describe my self in less then 500 words.
