Donald Trump is an American businessman, author, politician and recently elected President of the United States of America.

As discussed in our class just a couple of weeks ago, the US presidential election results may have been highly influenced by the significant appearance of PR and marketing techniques. That being said, the rise to victory for Present Donald Trump was one that many believe was greatly effected by press coverage and the usage of controversy as a tactic. Having spent years in the spotlight as a celebrity and in part due to his fame, Trump’s run for president received an unprecedented amount of media attention.

According to a Twitter analysis conducted by Brandwatch on Tuesday, November 8th, Trump received almost double the number of mentioned tweets than Hillary. As you can see from the above graph, there was only one occurrence at 8pm where Hillary gained more mentions due to a number of states announcing their electoral results. It was at 2:43AM on November 9th when Trump garnered approximately 30,000 Twitter mentions within a minute after he declared victory as the next US President.

Some brands and companies also sought to benefit from the outcomes of the election by creating various campaigns to promote their products and services. One example of this social media marketing technique was from Ryanair, an Irish low-cost airline headquartered in Dublin. Maintaining relevancy with its audience through live tweeting, two tweets from Ryanair read:

As outlined by Marketing Tech News, brands should learn from this historic event and the actions of the incoming US President to utilize strategies “to be bold and brave without being disrespectful, to be eloquent and up-front without shouting loudly and to be funny and engaging without being offensive.”
