“Mom, I wish you would switch to whole wheat pasta. There are so many health benefits!”
“But it’s more expensive and not as tasty. Your Dad and brother won’t like it.”
For the one month during the summer, while my parents were away, that I was in charge of groceries and cooking for my brother and I I decided to make the switch. Upon their return I had changed all of pasta at home to whole wheat! My Dad and brother liked how eating whole wheat pasta made them feel full for longer after a meal.
Whole wheat pasta is one way to increase your dietary fibre intake. It is thought that higher fibre diets can protect against heart disease by lowering blood pressure and reducing blood cholesterol. Fibre lowers cholesterol by aiding in the excretion of bile acids and forcing the liver to use its cholesterol to make new bile acids.
