GM to Open In-House IT Centers

The American car manufacturer General Motors plan to open four new I.T. centers around the world, in the hopes of cutting costs as well as bringing new innovation to the market. By doing so, GM plans to shift their IT services to a more in-house strategy by hiring up to 10,000 new employees within the next three to five years. This approach seems to be unorthodox and rare, as more and more companies are outsourcing their customer support to various Asian or South American countries such as India and the Philippines. This of course will bring up the topic on whether or not outsourcing various sectors to third-world countries is ethically correct. As someone who has lived in the Philippines, a place where outsourcing is abundant, I find that companies that have used outsourcing tactics such as Nokia, HSBC and Telus are generally helping both the employees, as well as the company’s bottom line. Because without these big corporations, some of the employees in these impoverished nations may still be living in poverty.
