As the gap in social discrepancy increases, the interactions between those with more social power and those with less financial stability has become a hot topic for discussion.
“A growing body of recent research shows that people with the most social power pay scant attention to those with little such power… The more powerful person shows fewer signals of paying attention like nodding or laughing. Higher-status people are also more likely to express disregard, through facial expressions, and are more likely to take over the conversation and interrupt or look past the other speaker.”
Although the gap between the rich and the rest of the nation’s population has always been an important social issue, the concern has become a paramount subject as of late. As income inequality is at its highest level in a century, the rising gap between the rich and the poor has drawn interest from psychology researchers from across the country.
In order for the world to move forward as one cohesive unit, each individual nation must acknowledge the micro-politics of interpersonal relationships in regards to social power, but strive to close the gap between the rich and the poor.
