Partnership: A Successful Marketing Strategy?

As mentioned in Evan Chang‘s blog, Jay-Z recently partnered up with Samsung for the release of his newest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, to confront the ongoing illegal downloading dilemma. In regards to the general idea of Evan’s post, as of late, many leading companies in competitive industries have used partnership agreements to increase sales and for companies to broaden their target market. For example, on November 13th, 2013, Volvo released a marketing campaign video promoting one of its most beneficial and differentiable features. With the help of Jean-Claude Camille Francois Van Varenberg, or more professionally known as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Volvo featured the Belgian martial arts action film star in a phenomenal feat: performing the splits between two reversing Volvo trucks. Just like how Jay-Z partnered up with Samsung, Volvo partnered up with Jean-Claude Van Damme. Why are both of these marketing ventures alike? Both of which, were partnership agreements with brands and iconic people outside of their specific industry. This approach has helped boost sales and brand exposure through creative social media outlets, and has led specifically to the expansion of a company’s target niche. In can be concluded that the idea of the intended viral video is to capture a younger audience and create awareness of the Volvo brand among future truck drivers.

#Business #Success #BlogPost #UBCSauder #HashtagPower

From one of our more recent class lectures, the structure and duty of a management information system, as well as a business technology management framework were discussed. In correlation to the class example of retail operations that have numerous ways to collect and process data, another emerging data capture/marketing alternative has now become a leading movement in the twenty-first century. The use of a simple hashtag is no longer just a fad, but it has now become a legitimate monotony.

With this in mind, the hashtag serves itself to the business world on a silver platter for growing businesses, especially small-business owners to display an advertisement or message across multiple platforms: capturing an audience in a matter of seconds. In addition, hashtags have become an ever increasing way for companies to capture data by using a specific hashtag. Quite literally, hashtags allow businesses to stir up conversation about the company and capture real-time consumer responses, promote its products to a wider target market, as well using the never-ending possibilities of hashtag implementation. For example, a company such as American Express has announced plans to allow customers to make purchases using hashtags.

Snap Decision by Snapchat CEO?

This past June, Snapchat hit the social media scene by storm. In fact, the innovative photo capturing application captured two hundred users by the end of the first month, and just three months later, clocked in at over two hundred million monthly users. A phenomenal feat considering how long its industry competitors have taken to create a user base half of  Snapchat’s size. As UBC Sauder School of Business professor, Paul Cubbon, indicated how “ideas are cheap,” in can be noted that the process in which the idea is applied is priceless. With this in mind, Snapchat grasped this concept and designed a social media application that leaves little room for any digital footprint. For the most part, Snapchat’s boom can be widely credited to the growing number of adolescents wanting a social media outlet unmonitored by parents or teachers.

Although Snapchat’s 23-year old founder, Evan Spiegel, rejected Facebook’s three billion dollar offer to buy out Snapchat, it will be interesting to see if Snapchat will innovate and grow from its current success. More importantly, it is crucial to mention that Snapchat has zero dollars in revenue, so is Snapchat’s decision to decline a three billion dollar takeover its downfall?

“Rich People Just Care Less”

The Article: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/05/rich-people-just-care-less/?src=me&_r=0

As the gap in social discrepancy increases, the interactions between those with more social power and those with less financial stability has become a hot topic for discussion.

“A growing body of recent research shows that people with the most social power pay scant attention to those with little such power… The more powerful person shows fewer signals of paying attention like nodding or laughing. Higher-status people are also more likely to express disregard, through facial expressions, and are more likely to take over the conversation and interrupt or look past the other speaker.”

Although the gap between the rich and the rest of the nation’s population has always been an important social issue, the concern has become a paramount subject as of late. As income inequality is at its highest level in a century, the rising gap between the rich and the poor has drawn interest from psychology researchers from across the country.

In order for the world to move forward as one cohesive unit, each individual nation must acknowledge the micro-politics of interpersonal relationships in regards to social power, but strive to close the gap between the rich and the poor. An interesting spin to the whole to the whole article… “How did the rich get rich in the first place? On the backs of the poor through the generosity of many invisible hands and hearts.”
