ACA chapter offers FOIPOP Workshop

The ACA student chapter is proud to present the workshop: Administering Access to Information and Privacy Legislation in Canadian Archives.
March 23 and 24
Exact times will be determined at a future date; the price will range from $5 to $15, depending on funding. A free lunch and coffee will be provided!

“How does access and privacy law affect the holdings and operations of public sector archives? This two-day workshop is a mini-version of the course taught at SLAIS. It will offer practical information and tools to administer FOI/POP activities. You will learn about five relevant circumstances that archivists need to consider: jurisdictional issues, organizational structure, delegation of authority, reporting relationship, and scope of administrative responsibilities. Using actual situations and problem-solving techniques, you will study strategies to help you administer the law and comply with your legal obligations. Topics to be covered are: routine disclosure of archival records, engaging the researcher in the FOI request management process, formal and informal access review procedures, severing records for disclosure, documenting access decisions and research agreements, and implementing procedures to protect the privacy of donors and patrons.”
The workshop will be conducted by Ian Forsyth. As a result of his position since 1994 as University Archivist / Information and Privacy Coordinator at Simon Fraser University, Ian has an extensive background in FOI/POP legislation. He developed this workshop specifically as a prequel to the 2005 ACA Conference. He also taught the FOI/POP class at SLAIS for a number of years.
