Youth Engagement Intern, FOOD and NUTRITION

 

Job Description

The West 1 community of schools is seeking several energetic and organized individuals to be responsible for delivering after-school food and nutrition/ cooking programs for school-aged children at a number of Westside elementary schools this 2013-2014 school year.

 

As part of the West 1 Community School Team (CST), the Youth Engagement Intern(s) will organize, mentor, and collaborate with high school leaders to design and deliver quality food and nutrition programs for elementary students.

 

With direction and support from the CST, the Intern(s) will administer all aspects of the programs they design, from delegating responsibilities to youth leaders to lesson planning, organizing nutrition-based games and activities, selecting recipes, supervising children, recording and monitoring participation levels, liaising with teachers and parents. He/she will be given a complete set of lesson plans (recipes and nutrition-related activities) to use as a template for their own lessons.

 

Interns should be prepared to commit to at least one afternoon per week (usually from 3:00-5:00pm) for a minimum of 7 weeks for program delivery, and one hour per week for preparation.

 

Skills Required

-Post-secondary studies, preferably with a concentration in food and nutrition sciences;

-Strong organizational and group leadership skills;

-Ability to problem-solve and multitask;

-Excellent oral and written communication skills;

-Experience working with school-aged and/or high school students;

-Interest and background in healthy food preparation, food security, and outreach.

-Project design, lesson planning, implementation, and evaluation;

-Team building and leadership skills;

-Healthy child development practices, age appropriate lesson planning, behaviour management;

-Role modeling and youth empowerment; and

-Community-based education.

There are currently 10 Youth Engagement Intern positions available with the Vancouver School Board’s West 1 Community Schools Team in the category of Food and Nutrition.

 

Applications will be accepted no later than January 8, 2014.

 

Hours Per Week

Winter term programs will run once per week from 3:00-5:00pm for a period of 7 weeks (between February and April 2014). Possibility of internship extension/ employment.
