“There’s no such thing as an unemployable major”

Whenever I tell people I’m majoring in English Literature and Creative Writing, I get questions like, “So, uh, what are you planning to do after you graduate?” I’ve even gotten “Isn’t that more like a hobby?”

Words like these peeve me. I chose my disciplines because I’m passionate about literacy and storytelling, but I’ve also learned from my brief stint at co-op that getting a degree – in any field of study – doesn’t necessarily prepare you for the “real world.” There’s really no such thing as an employable or unemployable major. Rather, you as an individual have to build your career, not your program. Here’s how:
