Thrive Coffee House hosted by LFS|US, FUS, SUS, AUS & Agora Cafe – Nov 3, 2015

“Thrive is a mindset and a week-long series of events focused on building positive mental health for everyone at UBC.”


 

In conjunction with UBC Thrive Week, LFS|US, FUS, SUS, AUS and Agora Cafe are hosting their very own Thrive Coffee House! Come and enjoy a night of performances and baked goods and refreshments! Admission is free and we will be selling baked goods, coffee and tea for a minimum donation of $1 per item. All proceeds will go to the Crisis Centre.

WHAT is a coffee house?
It is an open and inclusive space for students to express themselves artistically. Performances can range from singing, spoken word, playing an instrument, stand-up comedy, and many more. We will also be adding in a meditation session at the very beginning for all of us to de-stress along with other de-stress activities throughout the night!

WHEN is Thrive Coffee House?
Tuesday, November 3, 2015. The night will begin at 5 PM! Come early to save a seat!

WHERE is this happening?
In the Agora Café located in the downstairs of the Macmillan Building at UBC. 2357 Main Mall V6T 1Z4.

WHO can perform/attend this event?
YOU. This is an open event for everyone. Invite all your friends to come out and enjoy the night with us.

It’s that time of year again, the annual and highly anticipated Community Dinner! You are invited to join the Land and Food Systems Undergraduate Society (LFS|US) and the 4th year Dietetics students for a “Taste of BC”.

This 5-course meal will take your taste buds on a tour through the renowned growing regions of this beautiful province. Experience locally grown food, paired with locally brewed beers and wines. Come celebrate the land and community of British Columbia with us!

The LFS Community Dinner is a licensed event; therefore ATTENDEES MUST BE 19 YEARS OF AGE and provide two pieces of ID (one must be government-issued w/photo) at the event. In addition, we cannot promise that our event will be nut-free.

UBC Workshop for Students with Disabilities on transitioning from school to work – mid-November 2015

This is a great opportunity for those who anticipate to transition into the workforce from university soon! 


 

If you are living with a visible or non-visible disability and are a student in the health or human services, the Inclusive Campus Project would like to invite you to participate in a 3 hour workshop to focusing on the transition from university to the workforce.

A practitioner with a disability will share their experience and answer questions. Students will also learn skills concerning legal rights, advocacy, and disclosure.

This workshop will take place sometime in mid-to late November, depending on availability. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. 

You are eligible to participate in this workshop if you meet the following criteria:

  • Living with a disability(e.g., learning disability, physical disability, or mental health disability)
  • In a health and human service program(including, but not limited to, Audiology and Speech Sciences, Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology, Dental Hygiene, Dentistry, Food, Nutrition and Health, HKin, Law, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, OT, Pharmaceutical Sciences, PT, Social Worker, Teacher Education)
  • 19 years of age or older

Location: UBC Hospital

Duration of workshop: 3 hours

UBC Animal Welfare Team Movie Night Fundraiser – Nov 4, 2015

Come on out for LFS|US Wednesday Night Dinner at 5:00 and then hang around for our Movie Night Fundraiser at 6:00! You decide what we watch: Finding Nemo, The Lion King or Jurassic World! Popcorn and hot chocolate will be available with a donation, as well as 50/50 raffle tickets. We’ll provide plenty of pilows and blankets to snuggle up in!

The Great Climate Race | Nov 8th

Want to do something tangible about climate change in your community? Join The Great Climate Race to crowdfund for local solar energy projects! Th Grate Climate Race is a new 10k or 2.5k walk/run in Stanley Park happening on November 8, 2015. UBC students get 40% off registration by using the code UBCStudent when you register. Look forward to lots of entertainment and solar power energy will be used to run the race. Part of all registration fees goes towards the local solar energy project.

Meet the Dietitian Night – Nov 2, 2015 (RSVP link now available)

Save the Date! Monday, November 2nd, 6:30-8:30pm

Location: MacMillan Learning Commons, Room 360

Meet the Dietitian Night is back! This annual event presents a valuable learning opportunity for dietetics students and students hoping to apply to the Dietetics Program to meet and network with a diverse range of dietitians. Through small group discussions, students will be able to delve into and learn about the roles and responsibilities of this profession.

This is an incredibly helpful experience for those who are interested in applying to the UBC Dietetics Program! Current dietetics students will also be present to answer any questions you may have about the application process and program.

The cost is $10 for non-Dietitians of Canada members and free for Dietitians of Canada members.
DC student members must provide their member ID on the day of the event.
We will only accept cash on the day of the event so please have it ready.

On Friday, October 30th 2015, we have the pleasure of having Pamela Rogalski, the Co-founder and CEO of the Engineering Leadership Council, as our keynote speaker! As women are increasingly pursuing and holding top leadership positions in science, engineering, technology and mathematics, it is important to learn from valuable experiences of those before us and to find supporting role models. Like other intensive professions, there are always challenges in such demanding and competitive environments. Our talk will focus on preparing and inspiring individuals to strive for their greatest potentials, as well as provide insight and knowledge on responsibilities and barriers associated with these leadership positions. The event will take place from 12:15 pm-2:00pm in the School of Population and Public Health (Room B104), and all are welcome!

BIOGRAPHY:

 

Pamela co-founded and is the CEO of the Engineering Leadership Council. The ELC is a Community of Practice of professionals leveraging the business case for cutting edge socially responsible design. It is a nationally registered not-for-profit organization. Programs include peer-reviewed case studies of social responsibility, pre-procurement dialogues, industry training, and organizational coaching.

Pam’s engineering experience includes lecturing undergraduate and graduate university courses on communicating the business case for, and implementation of, socially responsible infrastructure. She executed major capitol program engineering procurement and strategy advising at BC Hydro, where she founded the first corporate chapter of Engineers Without Borders. She was a member of EWB’s Governance and Rural Infrastructure team in Ghana, Africa. She has also worked in the field on teams of geophysics and geotechnical engineers at Golder Associates and other consulting companies.
