The button blanket is one of the most essential elements of the First Nations ceremonial regalia. They are made with great creativity and pride, and are worn at community gatherings, public celebrations, political protests, and events to show authority at legal challenges. I specifically chose this artwork among the many displayed in the Museum of Anthropology as I have a personal interest in clothes and the emotional attachment in each. I value the symbol and power carried by this intricate creation made simply from threads and buttons. To wear a button blanket is to literally wrap oneself in one’s family crest, which is a symbol of shared history and identity. The emotional and social value in each blanket is therefore unique to each artifact. I found this artwork beautiful and empowering.
