According to the article (http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-19816642), Samsung is challenging the Apple’s $1 billion award verdict by a California court around August of this year. Apple has actually accused Samsung of infringing the following patents:

i)                    Use of a single search interface such as Siri

ii)                   Sliding gesture to unlock

iii)                 Tries to anticipate which words the user wants to type and makes recommendations.

iv)                 A way to manipulate structures such as phone numbers or postcodes within computer data.

Samsung made paperwork on 21 September to appeal for a retrial as Samsung believed an incomplete answer had been provided during jury selection. Samsung also questioned the verdict and result of the lawsuit has been unfair as there were restrictions imposed by Judge Lucy Koh.

The consequence of this kind of vicious competition causes the Galaxy Nexus smartphone to be banned in the US. At the same time, Apple has lost their court cases in Netherlands and South Korean. (http://www.bbc.com/news/business-18529756) The main concern for consumer is that both the giant firms have been involved in dozens of patents cases and causing bans on certain products in certain countries. Thus, it led to the inconvenience to consumers as they are actually cancelling out our freedom of choice. Rather than concentrating on decreasing each other’s market share using lawsuits, they should concentrate on winning each other with introduction of new gadgets and innovation to position themselves as the genuine leader in innovation of phone and tablet products in consumers’ minds. In the consumer’s point of view, do you think the current fight in court is good for you?

Reading through Wendy Vaz‘s blog post on “Business Ethics: Is Lying In Commercial Even Ethical“, I stronly agree with what she has said on Nokia’s commercial video on The Verge.

Business ethics is needed in conveying the message of a product. I believe it is wrong and they should be sued in court to show the false information to the customers. It is basically a lie to customers and as a multinational company, it looks ugly for them to do that. By deceiving the truth of their product and making the consumers to purchase The Verge is also a bad idea in terms of strategy. By losing the trust of the company, it is only the matter of time when the customer’s loyalty towards the brand diluted and worn out as they get disappointed with the expectation. Is it worth it to make a good sales just for a short term of period but losing the trust of customers and making lots of bad sales in the future?

Based on the article ( http://betanews.com/2011/03/17/is-microsoft-more-ethical-than-apple-or-google/ ), top firms around the globe such as Apple, Facebook and Google are not included in the list of  the 110 world’s most ethical firms. Ethisphere, an organization that evaluates companies around the world is taking into account of the ethics and compliance with corporate responsibility in the judgment of business ethics. Facebook has joined the list of philanthropists by donating over hundred million dollars. But, the effort seems to be suspicious as Facebook has indulged in some conspiracy regarding privacy ethics regarding their wide-used social network as according to this article. http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/breakout/3-ways-facebook-ipo-exploit-users-172215377.html They are selling information of its users and using every single click that users have done to make money without permission. The same goes with Google.Inc as they are corrupted with privacy issues. They use the keywords keyed into the search engine and Gmail, and sell it to advertisement companies. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/05/opinion/sunday/facebook-is-using-you.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all  Facebook and Google Inc., failed to show up in the top 110 list of most ethical companies because of their business ethics but Google search engine still has the largest shares of search while Facebook is still the leading social network. Do people really care that much about business ethics nowadays? Or is it because serious that falls on them thus they tend to ignore it.
