Professional Goals

Goal 1

To continuously challenge my perceptions and values of teaching throughout UBC’s BEd program and my future teaching career. This means being open to other methods of teaching, why these methods work, and the values behind these methods of teaching. This will be important to me on my practicum when I might not get a teacher advisor whom I share the same teaching philosophy. Throughout my teaching career, I want to embrace and create new ideologies of teaching, whether that is learning from other teachers or collaborating with other teachers to try new methods.

Objectives

1) After finding a connection between 2 or more course material (I will most likely write this in my reflection), I will think and try to write a section in my reflection how I could adapt this into my teaching. These ideas could be connections I make between courses or new ideas that I’ve been exposed to that I would like to try.

2) Try at least 2 different styles of teaching from what I observed from my instructors or will observe from teachers on my practicum.

3) Try to adapt technologies such as iPhones, iPads, laptops, and different apps into lessons.

Goal 2

Discover new passions in the subject areas that I am teaching and use this inspire and engage more students. Hopefully, this might inspire students who hate science to understand why science can be so fascinating.

Objectives

1) During the program, learn, try, and understand as many science demos from my other instructors or from the internet.

2) Stay connected with the scientific community by reading articles, ordering annual science journals to stay in touch with new research. Reading the newspaper and connecting new research with current events will help me add more interesting content to the lessons, as well as opportunities for inquiry.

3) Participate in the science process if possible. Engage in summer camps that allow students to use university equipment to discover science.

4) Adapt new science ideas and research in questions (exam, quiz, in-class inquiry, research topics) to add a fun component in the assessment process.

Goal 3

Prevent burnout.

Objectives

1) Improve time-managing skills by better organizing events, tasks, meetings, courses, etc on calendars, setting up reminders systematically – either on phone or iPad. Look into effective apps on iPad that facilitate this process.

2) Plan for exercise at least 2 times at week.

3) Plan to get things done in advance – this includes unit plans, lesson plans

4) Increase productivity and efficiency by scheduling more time for sleep.

5) Consult other teachers on strategies they use to organize their time and resources.

Other goals:

– Learn more about the public and private school system to discover which setting best suits my teaching style/teaching values and get exposure to both systems.

– Stay true to my core values throughout teaching career and encourage students to find their own set of values/beliefs as global citizens.
