Hi, I am Maggie. When I was about to finish my high school in Hong Kong, my parents decided to immigrate to Canada for me to have a better education. However, I preferred living and studying in a more vibrant environment, so I ended up going to a college in San Francisco Bay Area before I moved back to Vancouver living with my parents.
In my free time, I like to watch news, read, watch movies, practice yoga, dance and visit museums. I am currently in my forth-year Chemical Biology program, and planning to graduate this summer. I have been taking Biology and Chemistry courses since I was in middle school and they have been part of my time for a long time. I like science not only because I can learn a lot of practical and useful knowledge that I can apply in my daily life, but also it helps shape me to think analytically and rationally.
Admittedly, science is important and helpful for us, but only the science applied to solve problems can be really appreciated. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, only the basic needs such as physiology and security, are satisfied, our spiritual needs can be fulfilled. It inspired me to apply science to healthcare setting. From the experience volunteering and working in a community center and family physician clinic for several years in Vancouver, I realized I am particularly passionate about clinical medicine and public health. I have seen hundreds of Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking minority patients who missed surgery or other special treatment due to their language problems. I am glad that I have helped a lot of them translate the necessary information. Inspired by my volunteering experience in American Red Cross that many Hispanic patients also encountered the same problem, I am motivated to learn Spanish now. With my multi-lingual ability, I hope in the future, I can help more underserved people who are in need of healthcare around the world.
