The Environmental Impact of Apple Manufacturing and Business Ethics

By Marina Hooley, September 12, 2016

Altruism finds itself out of place when it comes to the topic of business ethics. It is difficult to imagine a company that acts purely in the best interests of society while continuing to successfully function and make a profit.

The decisions of large tech companies in particular are often scrutinized closely by the public, and certain actions, especially concerning environmental impact, may be met with backlash. In order to successfully operate, a company need first and foremost consider its bottom line – if money and advances are not being made the operation may be in decline. While important, this does not excuse the neglect of certain social responsibilities. This differs slightly from the thoughts of Milton Friedman, who states that “There is one and only one social responsibility of business… to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game…” Although the choices made by large corporations may seem primarily self serving, for their business to continue sometimes these choices must be made.

As one of the world’s leading providers of portable electronic devices, technology developing company Apple accordingly is responsible for a significant portion of the 20 million tons of e-waste (electronic waste) produced annually around the world. Along with its massive role in the everyday lives of millions across the world, many would argue that Apple has the responsibility of managing its environmental footprint.

Responding to these claims, Apple is moving towards using better elements to produce newer models of products and also more effectively recycling the older, more harmful metals. Apple is taking steps towards lessening its manufacturing impacts, making it an example of a business that yields profits and still supports social issues Apple is also now leaning towards the use of encouraged forms of energy sourcing termed green, such as hydroelectric, wind and in particular solar power. In doing so, this company is hoping to lead the way for other corporate powers to accept cleaner manufacturing methods. In this case, it is in the interest of Apple to adopt cleaner methods of manufacturing not only because of the social benefits, but also the financial. In switching to cleaner reusable forms of energy, Apple will save millions in electricity costs. A company can work ethically while still retaining their own interests and first considering internal success.
