Yilun Zhang is a storyteller from Shanghai, China, now living in Kelowna, Canada. His goal is to bring meaningful stories to the world through modern media. We are now living in an era of rapid technological advancement and people are trying to look into the future. He believes that although technology is advancing at a pace that people cannot imagine, it is also important to slow down and look back at the beauty of the past. He wants to continue to pass on his culture in this new medium through the technology of today. The Capstone project – The Apple Packing House Interactive Image, gave him the opportunity to do just that.

The Apple Packing House Interactive Image Project is displayed on a 50 inch screen combined with an interactive frame. The original archival black and white photograph is provided by the Kelowna Museum. It shows the interior view of the packinghouse in Vernon with staff working on the packing line and boxing Okanagan Apples. By interacting with the screen you can gain information about each role in the packing house and by exploring all of the image assets you will make the image come to life through a colour filter. This filter uses machine learning to estimate what the scene looked like in real-life. The apple crop and its industry are of historic significance to the Okanagan. Alan wanted to bring a new way of sharing this significant past with people to better understand the regional history.
