– Asynchronous Group Discussion Activity

without comments

Background

In Module 3 of this course, there are two distinct groups of learners: participants who use Windows XP and will complete readings and interactivities related to XP; other participants who use Windows Vista and will complete readings and interactivities related to Vista – including:

  • Reading a chapter in the custom text, either Getting Started with Windows XP or Getting Started with Windows Vista
  • Reviewing videos and animated demonstrations
  • Completing learning activities
  • Working with interactive media and annotated documents
  • Attending a synchronous web-conference for a module review and Q&A
  • And participating in the following Asynchronous Group Discussion Activity
    • Note to Instructor:  the actual Asynchronous Group Discussion Activity is located in the Moodle course under the Mod Wrap of Module 3 – in week 3
      • This works and I see no huge limitations-to-date, other than for auditory learners or kinesthetic learners who would much prefer to have a live oral discussion – but they will get some hands-on experience with various interactive learning activities and get a chance to see, hear and speak in some scheduled synchronous communication events :>)
      • A full description appears below
    • Groups will be established once students have responded to the Poll: What Version of Windows (earlier in the module)
    • Discussion format selected is: Each person posts one discussion topic
      – This discussion type, allows each participants to post exactly one new discussion topic (everyone can reply to them though).
      – It is useful when you want individuals to start a discussion, for example, posting his/her reflection on the week’s topic, and everyone else to read the individual postings and respond.
    • Groups will be set up as “separate”, meaning group members can see only postings in their group area.  However, once the posting period is past, this will be changed to “visible” so each group can read all postings made in either group area.
Module 3 Discussion Activity Description

Group Discussion Activity – Chapter Summarizing

1. Those of you who are using Windows XP have read and worked through Chapter 2 in our custom text: Getting Started with Windows XP”

2. Those of you who are using Windows Vista have read and worked through Chapter 3 in our custom text: “Getting Started with Windows Vista”

Discussion Groups

We have formed two groups for the purposes of discussion – based on your responses to the Poll: What Version of Windows?

  • Group XP is comprised of participants who informed us they were using Windows XP
  • Group Vista is comprised of participants who informed us they were using Windows Vista
Module 3 Activity
  1. Members of each group will summarize the chapter in our custom text related to either Getting Started with Windows XP or Getting Started with Windows Vista
  2. Each group member will create a new discussion topic with your group discussion area
one post that identifies and discusses a key point/concept from your Getting Started with Windows chapter

  3. Your posting must be unique, in that it cannot duplicate a key point already posted by another member in your group:
    • As the name of your discussion topic, use: Your Name – Title of Key Point

  4. Feel free to post comments to the key points posted by others, especially if you:
    • Have a revelation that links a couple of key points that have been posted
    • Can elaborate on an explanation for an existing post
    • Are able to provide an example or experience of how a posted key concept can or has been applied

  5. Each of you needs to complete your key-point post to the appropriate group, no later than Thursday, in order to give your classmates time to read and provide feedback no later than Sunday!
    • At the end of this group activity, we will have a useful summary of each of the Windows chapter
      – summaries produced from your perspective!

  6. Have fun as you reflect on the chapter content, pinpoint key issues, and make associations and connections with important concepts posted by your classmates.
    • Your Instructor(s) will review all of the postings and provide feedback to each group.
