The AMS Deficit

in AMS

There comes a time in the life of a blog when the news has dried up. So in lieu of CSSS shenanigans, we present this tidbit from the Mar 31 AMS Council meeting: if the AMS maintains their current spending, they will be going bankrupt “in 1.87 years starting this May”. How could this happen? Here are the take-homes from AMS VP Finance Elin Tayyar’s presentation.

Update: Voting starts today!

by Wendy on March 25, 2010

in CSSS Elections 2010

This blog has been full of words, words, and more words, but the time for action—informed, at least partially, by those words—is fast upon us. Our polling booth opens today for voting!

Drop by the lobby (i.e. the first floor entrance) of the Hugh Dempster Pavilion to vote; we will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm, both today and tomorrow.

A reminder: if you are a registered (i.e. declared) Computer Science major, then you are eligible to vote in this election!

Our election uses approval voting, as explained in the intro post; for each position, only voting for a subset of the candidates will make a difference, whereas voting for the set of all candidates is as effective as voting for the empty set. (In other words: voting for everyone is the same as voting for no one.)

Come cast your ballots! We look forward to seeing you all!

Profile: Treasurer

by ivy on March 25, 2010

in CSSS Elections 2010

The Treasurer has one mandate: making sure the Cube has enough money to throw awesome events. They’re responsible for balancing the sheets, preparing budgets for the AMS/SUS/AUS, and making sure no Cube committee spends too much money. They’re also responsible for the sale of Cube merchandise like the hoodies. And finally, they’re the go-to person if any officer needs help communicating with the AMS.

This position requires someone who has a keen financial mind and an obsessive eye for detail. As Cube committees will often ask monetary questions at the last minute, the Treasurer needs to be constantly on-the-ball. Being able to promptly answer such pressing questions as, “How much have we spent so far?”, “How much do we have left in our accounts?”, and “How much can we afford to spend on this event?” is a sign of a Treasurer doing his/her job well.

Candidates:

  • Benjamin Israel
  • Bobby Kim ^_^
  • Melissa Smith (A* Party)

Debates today went fairly smoothly (they had to move outside due to noise issues). One problem with these debates was that candidates often recycled their opponents’ answers. Understandable, as the good answers are all similar, but it would have been nice to see more originality.

Profile: VP External

in CSSS Elections 2010

The VP External is responsible for communicating with companies and organizing the Tech Career Fair—a hefty task. The VPX must be professional and aggressive in convincing companies to come to the Career Fair, and be willing to take calls from companies at any hour in the weeks leading up to the big event. It’s not an easy task when many companies aren’t looking to hire. Not only is the Career Fair important for students looking for a job, but funds raised through the Career Fair go directly to CSSS-funded events like the annual boat cruise. No Career Fair—no boat cruise.

Candidates:

  • Mubashshir Zakir
  • Jeremiah Tantongco (A* Party)

Update: Debate Tomorrow!

Alan Tan has withdrawn from the VP Internal race as he’ll be going on a Co-op term instead. (Students on Co-op terms aren’t allowed to be execs unless they’re working on campus.) This means VP Internal will now be a Yes/No vote.

And here I was so excited that the CSSS elections were more contested than the SUS ones 🙁

(Thanks anon tipster!)
