Sources and Reviews for List 7 and 8

1  Lyons, C.P and Bill Merilees. Trees, Shrubs & Flowers to Know in British Columbia and Washington. Vancouver: Lone Pine Publishing. 1995. Print.

This is a great resource. I found it very useful over the last couple of weeks. It provides detailed sketches, quick ID, and family and species names. The only downside would be that lacks information on uses and limitations of the plants since is is more focused on ID features than planting design features. Therefore, I would say it is a great resource to study from but not the best resource to help you complete the blog.

2 Pascoe, Michael. Woody Plants. Canada Plants, 2015. Web. 26 Oct. 2015. < http://www.canadaplants.ca>.

An online blog/database of plants in Canada. They take the great approach of where they believe there are no bad plants, jut bad uses of plants. It is very thorough and lists a general description, ID features, habitat, descriptions of buds, leaves, flowers and bark. Once again however, there is little to no information about suitable uses. There are however, really fantastic photos of the plants and the information is well written and easy to understand. I would recommend this resources. It is also nice since it focuses on Canadian plants and has perennial plants, woody plants, annuals, bulbs, and more!

3  United States Department of Agriculture. Plants Database. Natural Resources Conservation Service, 2015. Web. 26 Oct. 2015. <http://plants.usda.gov/java>.

A more reputable website to use. I would definitely recommend this website for those wanting a greater array of information. However, I think for the purpose of this blog, it is too complicated to be that useful. One of the downsides is that it provides many resources for you to follow up with and so using this site is more work. In addition, the links it provides for more information do not always work and it lacks photos of the plants. However, it also has a neat category that looks at the cultural significance of the plant; this would be a great resource for planting designs that have an emphasis of cultural awareness of an area.
