Sources and Reviews for List 3+4

1 The Royal Horticultural Society. Find a Plant Database. London, UK, 2015. Web. 25 Sept. 2015. <https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/Search-Form>

This website is quite good. It is very basic and easily accessible for a plant beginner. It covers most of the essential plant identification information and at the bottom of each page, it lists the features the plant is noted for and where it is native. On the flip side, unfortunately the site offers few photos of the plant and some of the information is left blank. It did not contain all of the plants in list two but did have the majority. This is a good source to begin your initial research into a plant, however you will need to dig deeper to other sources to gain a fully comprehensive idea of the plants characteristics.

2 Klinkenberg, Brian. (Editor). E-Flora BC: Electronic Atlas of the Plants of British Columbia. Department of Geography and UBC Herbarium, 2015. Web. 25 Sept. 2015. <http://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/Atlas>

In general, this is a very poor resource and I would not recommend it. I have reached this conclusion for several reasons. Firstly, the search bar does not work. For example, if you search “Viburnum lantana”, it says no records found however if you manually scroll through the list, Viburnum lantana does actually appear. Secondly, there is little, to none information about the plants themselves. Most of the pages are missing photos and relevant information. The only benefit of this site is that it provides you with several other references for you to move forward with.

3 Murray, Susan. Our Sylvan Heritage: A Guide to the Magnificent trees of South Fraser.  Hong Kong: Fitzhenry & Whiteside. 1953. Print.

This is an older resource. Again it is a very simple resource and great for just starting out. It lacks good descriptions of the leaves and instead focuses more on the aesthetic quality of the plants and where they are located in the South Fraser. It is very concise and each plant is only afforded half a page or so. This means that all of the ID information for a specific plant can definitely not be found using just this one source. It has great pictures of the overall form of the plants but in general, there are no specific photos centered on leaves, flowers, etc. Unfortunately, only a small handful of the plants on list two could be found within this book. However perhaps with later lists it shall prove more useful.
