Learning Outcome

Explain the two ethical theories—consequentialism and deontology—and identify the differences between them.

Interactive Video

Design Considerations

Following the introduction of the two ethical theories—consequentialism and deontology—this interactive video presents specific hypothetical scenarios that challenge students in the ethical decision-making process.

The interactive features of the video align with Shelton et al. (2016)’s description, which includes the ability to review or skip video chapters and content, pause to process content, answer electronic pop-up questions to direct focus and/or check for understanding, and prompt the student to select.

Specifically, the interactive components added in this video provide added value for students, encouraging them to pause, reflect, and offer their own answers to each scenario, preventing passive viewing. The ‘Pause and Think’ feature prompts students to take a moment to consider their own ethical approach to decision-making, while the follow-up questions ask them to provide their own responses to each scenario. Additionally, the final quiz offers an opportunity to recap and test their knowledge through a simple ‘drag the words’ activity.
