Guiding Questions: How familiar are you with the condition Sleep Apnea? Do you know anyone who has Sleep Apnea? Did you realize that head and neck anatomical features are contributory factors to this condition?

Activity One

This self- assessment exercise is designed to peak learner interest early in the session. The results of the self-assessment will be used as a tool for application of knowledge learned through all sessions.

Look at yourself in the mirror and document the following on a piece of paper:

a. A brief description of your mouth position at rest

• Is your mouth open or closed?
• Are your anterior teeth visible?

b. Do you breathe through your mouth or your nose?

c. Do you have an anterior open bite?

d. When you swallow:

• Where is your position of the tip of your tongue?
• Where does your saliva go- towards the front or towards the back of the throat?
• Are your facial muscles (lower lip) active when you swallow?

Activity Two

To complete the self-assessment exercise you are required to scaffold your prior knowledge from your oral and bio-medical science courses and read the required readings found on the home page of this course.

This exercise involves knowledge; comprehension; application; and analysis levels of cognitive learning; and higher levels of affective learning. Accordingly, this instructional strategy will require the learner to recall and apply facts; concepts; principle and rules procedures; and attitudes in this exercise.

Assess your orofacial and myofunctional risk factors for sleep apnea on yourself. Then self-reflect on your own health and orofacial development as you move through this exercise (co-morbidities). Document this information as you will share these results with your clinical partner during lesson 2 & 3 that will take place in the clinical setting.

After you have completed the risk factors and reflect on your own health proceed to the next step of this self-assessment.

Use the following documents to complete your self-assessment.

Epworth Sleepiness Scale Questionnaire
