Mummy

In a rational sense, you might think that Mummy is just a dead body, but do you know it has a mythology? In history, mummy is an object for preserving humans or animals’ bodies after they died. It was preserved in a cold weather and a place where the sun light cannot approach. It, typically, would be used for the preservation of honoured dead, such as kings or famous people, which is called mummification. On the other hand, a mummy was an immortal creature and evil in different stories. It was portrayed as the dark god and it can create fear for others.

Mummy is local to me because it has different stories across countries, such as China, Europe, Egypt, even in Canada. I believe that everyone has heard about mummy in someway and we should have the similar idea about what mummy is. In this entry, I would love to introduce Egypt mummies to you because it is common in modern stories and films.

Pharaohs, which are  the ancient Egyptian monarchs, is one of the most common types of people that will be used for mummification after their death, because their reputation represents gods, and Egyptians would want to preserve their body in order to continue his afterlife. In mythology, the curse of the pharaohs, which is created by an Ancient Egyptian mummy, is popular even in today society. Specifically, people who get this curse will have bad luck, illness, or even dead.

One of the curses is “Tomb Curses”, which people who disturb the private tombs will be cursed. Tutankhamun’s curse is one example for tomb curses. Tutankhamun was died at 1325BC and then he was processing mummification. After many years, in about 1922, Geogre Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon discovered this mummy but he died after five months due to pneumonia supervening on facial erysipelas, which is a streptococcal infection of the skin and underlying soft tissues. There are different explanations about his death because he had serious health problems before he discovered the mummy.

Although the curses of pharaoh can be explained in some ways, such as diseases spreading by open the tomb, this mythology is still continuing until the modern day.
