Welcome to the Scarfe Sandbox.

Please peruse the resources using the thematic main menu, the full categories list or try the search field. For a listing of ‘all posts’, visit “Blog Roll” in the main navigation menu. I hope you find something that sparks an idea!

This website is a compilation of blog posts related to teaching, learning and digital tech integration created during my time teaching, mentoring and advising in the Faculty of Education at UBC Vancouver (2013-2024). Some of the writing was contributed by colleagues, by undergrad and graduate students and some I wrote myself. I’d like to acknowledge that a great deal of support for this work was provided over the years by the students at UBC Vancouver via Teaching Learning Enhancement fund and WorkLearn grants and by the Faculty of Education and Teacher Education leadership.

My name is Yvonne Dawydiak, I am an experienced educator with over 20 years K12 teaching experience and 10 years post-secondary experience. I completed a Masters of Educational Technology at UBC in 2010 and my BEd in the early 90’s. I live and work on the unceded traditional territories of the SENĆOŦEN and Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓ speaking Coast Salish peoples on an island settlers named Salt Spring after the natural springs found on the island.

I am passionate about inclusive, active learning pedagogies – ensuring students are at the center. It was a privilege to work with teacher candidates. faculty and staff in various capacities from 2013 until 2024 at UBC.  After retiring from my role as Learning Design Manager in Teacher Education in 2024, I continue to teach online, design courses, work on special projects, conduct professional development and consult with school districts.

Please feel free to reach out by commenting and apologies in advance for broken links or errors in content. I’ve migrated my work from a previous webspace and am slowly reviewing and editing in this informal archive so that I might continue to share relevant resources with my students, colleagues and educators in general.

  1. Thanks Wendy. It’s exciting to be a part of the Year of Teacher Education at UBC! I hope everyone is following #YTEUBC on Twitter… there are so many relevant tweets, references and links… not to mention just plain fun!

  2. Re the conversations that took place today…..I agree with the idea of having two parts in the learning curve….workshops re simply learning about the technological possibilities, then followed by specific subject related workshops.

  3. Sandbox sessions are fantastic! They are a great opportunity to learn new and fun ways to integrate and incorporate technology into our classrooms. I love all the tutorials about the educational websites and cloud based opportunities available. I have already made some class tutorials for our class’ blog, some great presentations, and even a hook for a class by making a mini trailer. Because of the sandbox sessions, I was inspired to go to the CUEBC professional development workshop. And it was amazing. I am looking forward to investigating some of the websites and apps that were presented during the lunch time tech support offered through the sandbox program.

  4. Thank you Brittney. It’s terrific to see TC’s taking their learning into practicum in such authentic and engaging ways. Thank you also for sending samples of some of the work you’re doing. We’re looking forward to sharing in your learning some more this year!
