Two years ago, I was oblivious to the existence of GIS. Through my first GIS course, Introduction to Geographical Information Science, I became hooked to every aspect: retrieving, projecting, analyzing data, and creating visually enticing maps. As I advanced through the GIS courses that my University has to offer, I became more and more drawn to how tangible, practical, and versatile this field of study is. It was challenging, yet rewarding at the same time. And through my Cartography course, I put my past graphic design skills into use and became even more intrigued by the elements of map design. I’ve learned the essentiality of GIS to daily life, becoming a creator, analyzer, and an audience to maps of all kinds. Like ESRI made me realize during my first GIS lab, I want to keep creating “a map for every story”, and progressing, like how my first map compares to my last.
