NEEDS BASED MENTORING (NBM)
This approach was formulated after years of research about what works and what doesn’t in youth mentoring, and what youth want and need. NBM is about the language we use with youth- as it is ULTIMATELY their choices day-to-day that leads them down different paths. NBM is also about where the youth and the helpers are. How do we use the education system better in this one way. An ideal and aspirational mentoring approach should exist in schools! If we can prioritize Tier 3 youth, the Ministry, and Federal and Provincial Policy will make additional planning blocks, FLEX time and/or an elective in Mentoring available and possible. We are piloting the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of NBM now in Vancouver School Board (VSB), Vancouver Alternative Secondary Schools (VASS). It is a 100% school embedded approach to mentoring. NBM is both developmental and instrumental, and uses Motivational Interviewing as its foundational communication style. We seek to increase the engagement and success of involved students.
