Conclusion

In conclusion, based on the linear regression models of the variables we found that violent crime rates in Toronto are strongly correlated with areas of lower average incomes and higher numbers of visible minorities. As seen in our series of linear regression models, we have identified a number of problem areas that require additional police attention in the attempt to reduce rates of violent crime in the city.

Furthermore, based on the 1 kilometer buffer zones of police and ambulance facilities, we found a number of areas that could use an increased amount of facilities within the areas. In these areas it is important for the city to allocate services in order to help prevent violent crime occurrences. Additional attention from police services is required, however we find that ambulance facilities are distributed well throughout the city.

From the lecture notes, we have conducted our analysis based on criteria of a spatial analysis:

For our project, our aim was to complete an inductive and normative spatial analysis. Using secondary data gathered from multiple sources, we found a pattern with strong correlation between variables to identify specific census tracts that need attention in order to reduce the violent crime rates, thus improving the city’s well being.

Secondly, we attempted to conduct a normative spatial analysis for the purpose of first identifying the areas that need the most attention, and using facility buffer zones to hypothesize where to allocate services to reverse the trends we found.

We conclude that the highest rates of violent crime occur in the northwestern region of the City of Toronto, particularly in three census tracts. This high rate of violent crime is correlated with higher numbers of visible minorities and lower average incomes. In order to reduce the rates of violent crime in these areas more police services and facilities should be allocated to the areas. Furthermore, these areas may benefit from adding more support systems such as community centres for troubled youth and financial outreach programs. Programs such as these may help build a positive foundation for the communities in an attempt to lower rates of violent crimes and may help reduce the costs of adding additional taxed services such as police and medical facilities.
