Inquiry Proposal

Yesterday, my good friend Derek and I gave a successful workshop on guitar and ukulele. We covered the basics: the anatomy of the instruments, teaching methodologies, and techniques. We also delved into some interesting research regarding the pros and cons of tablature, and how to translate from one instrument to the other.

This process of learning from fellow teachers in our cohort is a very rich and rewarding experience, and I highly value our unique and diverse skill sets.

Discovery Learning – A Practicum Memory

I had a truly amazing short practicum at Gladstone Secondary, with the inspiring Mr. Braverman. One day after school, I popped by with my son, and Mr. B was quick to invite him to discover the wonders percussion section. This free, easygoing, and playful approach both by my son and sponsor teacher was a lovely reminder of how I see music and the role of the musical environment in our lives.

Thanksgiving Weekend

We made it this far! The first day, first week, and first month of school are all behind me. Important landmarks! Beyond its questionable vestiges in colonial history, for me Thanksgiving is a time of great reflection and gratitude for what I have in this life, in health, family, and friendship especially.

I feel enormously grateful to my wife Sarah, and our son, Eliot for navigating these big changes with me, and taking on some exciting challenging changes of their own; Eliot just started preschool! We’ve been delighted to see the changes and excitement that this brings him, and the joy he is suddenly discovering in his classmates. There are certainly parallels to my learning journey, as the increase of group work and the strength of group cognition are new and exciting discoveries for me. Anyhow, that is a quick snapshot of where we’re at right now!
