Field Trip: Arts Umbrella

Please remember to bring in your field trip forms by Wednesday January 25th

January 27th, Division 5 is going to the HSBC Arts Umbrella Workshop at their Granville Island location.  Your child received a field trip consent form today and should have brought it home this afternoon.  The students will be participating in a theatre arts workshop, a visual arts workshop and a media arts workshop.  Please ensure that your child has lunch and water in a backpack that they can carry, and appropriate clothing and shoes for the weather.

Cost: $12.00 (the cost of the bus ride)

Here are the guidelines outlined by the Arts Umbrella staff:

  • “A parent who will be able to let the students express themselves and to create their own artwork without judgement.”
  • “We ask that it is just one parent in the room and that their own child isn’t in that workshop.”

“Thanks for your understanding with these requests.” – The Arts Umbrella Staff

Culture

We learned the layers of the Earth this week in our Culture study.

Layers of the Earth.

The students also participated in an experiment around the arrangement of matter. Students learned that matter arranges itself by density.  Each of the elements of the Earth arranged themselves according to density.  The most dense went to the bottom, or center, of the Earth. The least dense remained above.  Students used the scientific method to predict and observe what would happen if we were to shake a jar with sugar, rocks and a ping pong ball.  Students used their knowledge of how matter arranges itself to predict.  Of course, the ping pong ball remained near the surface of the sugar while the rocks sank and were buried.

Social Responsibility/Classroom Community

The kinetic sand – one of the many tools we have in the classroom to help bring us back into the green zone so that we are alert and ready for learning.

Lice

Hi Division 5 families,

It has been brought to my attention that lice is, once again, in our classroom.  Please check your child’s head and treat them if necessary.  If you have the means to keep your child home from school until you are certain that they are lice-free, please do so.  It seems as though many children are still coming to school knowingly with lice.

Thank you!
