Abstract

There is a well-established link between alcohol and crime. Alcohol-related crimes tend to be more violent in nature due to the substance’s potential to limit someone’s judgement and inhibition. By focusing on public intoxication, this study will look at violent crimes that occur in a public setting. Looking at the crime data for Vancouver in the year 2021 for specific types of crime, they are used as a proxy to determine where public intoxication may occur and following that, where alcohol-related incidents might happen in Vancouver. The results show that the crimes in question are clustered in certain areas, and there may be a correlation between where a crime takes place and a location of an alcohol-related establishment. In addition, there may be other factors that influence public intoxication and crime, including spatial factors and social factors.
