Ground Signals Exhibition Tour, October 4 @ 7-8:30pm

Artists in Canada are actively making work in response to concerns about land, water,
and energy. Learn more about their powerful artwork in an engaging exhibition tour of
Ground Signals on Wednesday, October 4 from 7 to 8:30pm at Surrey Art Gallery, led by
co-curators Roxanne Charles and Jordan Strom. Admission is free.
From paintings, audio recordings, sculpture, and videos that engage with colonial
histories to the legacies of extractive economies, the multisensory artwork in Ground
Signals invites response. As you exchange stories for energy, travel back in time to
Tahltan territory, or listen to spoken word poetry while contemplating a painting, youre
challenged to reconsider your relationship to the places you live, work, play, and
recreate. Strom and Charles will share behind-the- scenes information on the thirteen
artists and artwork and draw out connections between the works. Both regular tour
participants and first-time Gallery visitors are encouraged to ask questions and share
their responses to the art. No need for an art degree”this casual and informal tour is
welcome to all.
About Ground Signals
Paintings and picturesque photographs of Canadas rugged wilderness and untouched
nature continue to permeate our media and underwrite our national identity. Yet the
Canadian landscape has rarely ever been untouched. The land has long been inhabited.
There have been many centuries of cultural production by Indigenous Peoples that
represent the land and the connection between nature and human experience in very
different ways from the traditions encompassed within Western landscape art. During
recent decades, new generations of artists working in Canada have drawn from a wealth
of other non-Western practices and developed new forms of media to represent the land
beyond the romantic, expressionistic styles and pictorial forms that have become so
familiar. These artists invite us to consider our own presumptions and relationship to the
places around us”beyond seeing them as scenic or banal, as sources of investment
and industry, or as sites of recreation.
Building on several recent Surrey Art Gallery exhibitions that have addressed
landscape, ecology, territory, and mapping, Ground Signals challenges visitors to listen
and experience the land in fresh and compelling ways through a combination of sounds
and images.

Workshops

Creativity 101 with Elfred Matining
9am to 3pm on Friday, November 10, 2017

How do we talk about creativity within an institutional, educational context? Through left- and right-brain workshop activities, participate in a series of collaborative, hands-on experiences that will unpack contemporary perceptions of art and education, philosophies and domains of the creative process, and an introduction to arts integration as an approach to teaching.

Pedagogy: Art Practice as Teaching Practice with Dianna David
9am to 3pm on Friday, December 1, 2017

Learning is the acquisition of knowledge; investigating the multiple ways that transfer can occur is the subject of pedagogy. An art practice is potent with the capability to create dialogue — and through this dialogue, learning happens. Working with professional teaching artists, explore how the creative process, through an arts integration approach, can be utilized to engage and activate the imaginations of young people.

Navigating Resources with Emily Beam
9am to 3pm on Friday, January 12, 2018

Having a sound knowledge of resources is key to creating inclusive, informative and engaging arts-based learning experiences for young people. Discover where to access relevant resources and learn how to utilize them effectively. Through a series of collaborative workshop activities, learn how to navigate the BC Ministry of Education Curriculum with confidence, present your professional art practice to educators and design learning focused workshops and performances.

School Culture Panel Discussion
9am to 3pm on Friday, February 9, 2018

Every school has a unique combination of cultural values, norms and guiding principles that form their collective “school culture”. Through an interactive panel discussion and hands-on presentation with experienced educators and professional teaching artists, gain perspectives about the contemporary nuances of schools in British Columbia. Gain a better understanding of what the day to day of a travelling performing artist in school is like.

Meta-Learning with ArtStarts
9am to 3pm on Friday, March 9, 2018

Learning requires constant reflection to deepen our understanding and perspectives. Taking all of our learning in the last 5 months as our starting point, we dive into “meta-moments” to unpack the process and methods of learning that we all collaboratively created and participated in throughout the Learning Lab. Allow methods and styles of facilitation to become explicit as we unpack our learnings together.

Volunteer Posting – Pedalling Art

The AMS Bike Co-op is looking for volunteers to help the organizers of the second ever Pedalling Art:
Vancouver’s Annual Bike Art Auction . This year’s event will take place on Friday, November 10th at Gam
Gallery .
Pedalling Art is a silent auction fundraiser for two programs run by PEDAL and the AMS Bike Co-op:
Pedals for the People and Bici Libre . These programs divert bikes from the waste stream, refurbish them
with the help of volunteers, and give bikes to people that would otherwise have little to no means of
reliable transportation. The programs also subsidize repairs and provide mechanical instruction and
support in the form of toolkits when possible.
__________________________________________________________________________
Volunteers are needed to assist with planning and execution of the event.
Volunteers can expect to gain skills and experience in the following areas:
● Event staffing, planning, and promotion
● Curation
● Gallery install / uninstall
● Non-profit management
● Programs management
Please e-mail pedalling.art.vancouver@gmail.com or call 604-822-2453 to join our team.
