Welcome

Welcome to the ETEC 512 Vygsotky site. We invite you to  explore the pages, posts, and links as you see fit. When you find a question that interests you, make a comment or join the conversation on that page or post.

Also, as you explore the pages and posts, see if you can recognize elements of what we are doing that might reflect operating with a Vygotskian perspective and also how this medium might also run counter to Vygostky’s theories. Is there a place for Vygotsky within an on-line learning environment? How does where we are in terms of on-line learning support or contradict Vygotsky’s theories? At the end of the week (or before if you prefer) come back to this post and post your responses to the above questions.

We look forward to reading what you have to say, and to seeing what understandings we can build together.

Breanna, Jo-Anne, and Matthew

First Peoples Principles of Learning and a Vygotskian Perspective

Read the First Peoples Principles of Learning (below). Think about the following question and post your thoughts in the “Comments” section.

Question: To what extent do elements of these principles work within a Vygotskian framework of education?

The First Peoples Principles of Learning

  • Learning ultimately supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors.
  • Learning is holistic, reflexive, reflective, experiential, and relational (focussed on connectedness, on reciprocal relationships, and a sense of place).
  • Learning involves recognizing the consequences of one’s actions.
  • Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities.
  • Learning recognizes the role of indigenous knowledge.
  • Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story.
  • Learning involves patience and time.
  • Learning requires exploration of one’s identity.
  • Learning involves recognizing that some knowledge is sacred and only shared with permission and/or in certain situations.
