“Breaking the Mold, Breaking the Silence”
A National Conference on Body Image

NANCY’S CHAIR IN WOMEN’S STUDIES at MSVU is pleased to invite you to
participate in a national conference on Body Image that will include a
range of issues, for youth and elders, girls and boys, men and women,
diverse sexualities, cultures, and ethnicities.

PURPOSE: To share the information, scholarly and popular, and the
experience needed to take back our bodies as our most useful resource of
intelligence, productivity, beauty, and accomplishment. The conference
is a celebration of the food, activity, youth, and age that will give us
continual physical and mental vitality.

YOU SHOULD ATTEND this conference if you are a teacher or librarian who
works with people from grade 5, through university, to adult education;
health professional; scholar or artist whose research interest is Body
Image; parent, student, or member of the general public who wishes to be
more informed.

WE WELCOME PROPOSALS for performances, screenings, panels, or
individual papers, on any aspect of the Body Image topic. In particular,
but not limited to, we seek proposals which address any of the following
themes or issues:

-Self esteem, prevention, and identification of individuals at risk
from disordered eating.
-Appreciation of a variety of standards of beauty, girls’ studies,
issues of aging, and building communities around a rainbow of cultures.
-Doing nutrition and the joys of good food.
-Body Image Resources:  media literacy, on-line, peer counselling,
spoken and written word, visual arts, video, etc.
-Disabilities, adaptations, and varieties of accommodations.

We welcome delegates from ages 12 to 90. There are possibilities for
publication and distance education.

Registration fees are nominal and cover all costs including meals and
nutrition breaks:
$45.00, professional; $3.00, students/ non professional.

To register for this conference and/or submit a 250 word abstract
please email Mary Lou O’Hara at the address below. Abstracts should be
submitted by June 4, 2010. Abstracts will undergo a peer review process
and we anticipate notification by July 30, 2010.  The abstract must
include a title and author’s name. It should be single spaced, with no
headers or footers. It should be on one page.  Please send your abstract
as a Microsoft Word document attached to an email. The subject line of
your email should state: “Body Image abstract.”
