Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions that Waterloggers have previously asked. If you don’t see an answer to your question, don’t hesitate to contact us at waterlogged.ubc@gmail.com

1) What do I do if I don’t have a GPS?

If you turn location services on, most smart phones embed the GPS coordinates of where a photo was taken. If you don’t have a smart phone, try your best to find the sample location on Google Maps, and then email us the link.

2) The river/stream that I am sampling is way too deep to sample in the middle, what do I do?

Always stay safe, and never enter water that is flowing quickly and/or is deep (above your knee). If the location is unsafe to sample in the middle, sampling from the side of the river is OK as long the water is still moving.

3) How long after a sample is taken do I need to refrigerate it?

Ideally as soon as possible. The best case scenario would be to take an ice pack with you when sampling, and then place the sample in a fridge as soon as you get home.

4) How long after I receive a sampling kit should I return the sample?

Our aim is to have a one-week turnover from the time we give a sampling kit out, to the time that we receive a sample.
